The Hidden Habits That Are Keeping You Broke (Without You Realising)

Today, I want to share my thoughts with you and talk about something that most people don’t like to admit, because it doesn’t feel good to look at, to think about, to face up to—but it’s one of the most important conversations we can have if we truly want to change our financial future.

As sad as it is, for many people, being “broke” or feeling financially stuck isn’t the result of one big mistake or one unfortunate event… it’s the result of small, repeated habits that quietly shape their financial reality over time, often without them even realising it’s happening. Often caused by generational habits that have remained unbroken for decades, sometimes centuries.

And the hardest part? These habits don’t always feel destructive in the moment. In fact, they often feel completely normal. Comfortable, even. Hence why they carry on through generations of families, holding people hostage to habits, thoughts and patterns that aren't really theirs.

And, over time, they compound. Just like interest does in wealth building… habits compound in the opposite direction too.

One of the most common hidden habits is living in a constant cycle of “just enough.”

Just enough to get through the week.
Just enough to cover the bills.
Just enough to make it to the next payday.

And while there’s no judgement in that—many people are doing their best within their current circumstances—this mindset slowly becomes a ceiling on possibility.

Because when your entire focus is on getting through the short term, it becomes incredibly difficult to think long term. And wealth, real wealth, is always built through long-term thinking.

Over time, this “just enough” mindset doesn’t just reflect your current situation… it starts to shape what you believe is possible for your future.

Another hidden habit that quietly keeps people stuck is the imbalance between consumption and creation.

It’s easy to spend hours consuming content—scrolling, watching, absorbing other people’s lives, ideas, opinions, and entertainment. It feels effortless, even relaxing at times.

But if most of your energy is going into consuming, and very little is going into creating, building, learning, or applying… then your growth naturally slows down.

Because nothing in your life changes just from consuming information.

Change happens when you take that information and do something with it. Even imperfectly. Even slowly. Even while you’re still learning.

But consumption without action creates the illusion of progress… without the reality of it.

For many people, money is something they actively avoid thinking about in depth.

They might check their bank account when necessary.
They might pay the bills when they come in.
But they don’t really engage with it beyond that.

There’s no real awareness of where money is going, how it’s being spent, or what patterns are forming over time.

And when something is avoided, it cannot be improved.

Financial growth requires awareness. Not obsession—but awareness.

Because you cannot change what you are not willing to look at.

Perhaps one of the most subtle habits of all is the daily choice of comfort over growth.

It doesn’t look dramatic. It doesn’t feel like a big decision.

It’s choosing the easier option instead of the more disciplined one.
It’s putting things off until “later.”
It’s staying in familiar routines because they feel safe.

And again, none of this feels like a major problem in isolation.

But over time, these small decisions create a pattern—a pattern of staying exactly where you are, while hoping your life will somehow change.

And it rarely does.

Because growth requires discomfort. And discomfort is exactly what most people naturally avoid.

The uncomfortable truth is this: your financial situation is not just shaped by your income—it is shaped by your habits, your awareness, and your willingness to do things differently.

And until those things change, the outcome rarely does.

But here’s the encouraging part—this is not permanent.

These habits are not your identity.
They are not fixed.
And they are absolutely not beyond your control.

They are simply patterns that have been built over time… and anything that has been built can be rebuilt.

Real change begins the moment you stop normalising what is keeping you stuck.

The moment you start noticing your patterns instead of just living inside them.
The moment you decide that “just enough” is no longer enough for you.
The moment you start taking responsibility for what you consume, how you think, and how you act.

And most importantly…

The moment you start choosing small, intentional actions that align with the future you actually want—not just the life you’ve fallen into.

Because wealth is not built in one decision.

It is built in thousands of small choices that either move you forward… or keep you exactly where you are.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re working hard but not really getting ahead, I want you to know you’re not alone in that experience.

But I also want to gently challenge you to consider this—

It may not be a lack of effort.
It may not be a lack of opportunity.

It may simply be a collection of small habits that are quietly shaping your results.

And the moment you become aware of them… is the moment you gain the power to change them.

Because once you see the pattern, you’re no longer controlled by it.

You can choose differently.
You can think differently.
And over time, you can build something completely different.

And that’s where everything starts to shift.
